MOROCCO , just a short swim from Gibraltar , Algeciras & Tarrifa. Have always commanded the respect, & fascinated the imagination of Europe.
Morocco was one of the last nations to fall under colonial occupation; and the first to win its independence from the French. The very same Grand Vizier who greeted the first French Governor had the satisfaction of ushering out the last colonial ruler before his death. - In olden times, a monarch often had a grand vizier, who served not only as an executive of the realm, but as a confidant. Rulers could trust this grand vizier in a way that they couldn't rely on lesser ministers, friends, or even family members. The key : The vizier was totally loyal to the ruler in a personal way that others were not.
Even to its fellow Muslim nations it was the near legendary ‘Maghreb el Aksa', the land of the farthest west, the haunt of magicians and malevolent spirits – djinn. Perched on the north-west corner of the African continent, it is encased in four mountain chains and isolated by three seas: the Mediterranean, the Atlantic and the sand sea of the Sahara .
The Saharan gold trade was the window that opened Morocco to the world. In the far south-eastern corner of the country, the city of Sigilmassa in the Tafilalt oasis was the Saharan port from whence came camels. These ships of the desert would assemble in caravans before attempting the dangerous two-month crossing. They took salt to west African markets, such as Timbuctoo, and returned to Morocco with gold and the lesser cargoes of ivory, bales of ostrich feathers, rare scents, ebony and slaves.
These were auctioned at Sigilmassa and sold to the merchants of Fez and Marrakesh , who then despatched smaller caravans across the mountain passes to their great cities. Further profits were to be made by taking goods north up to the Mediterranean ports, like Tangier, where the quays bustled with European ships eager for a portion of this highly lucrative trade. All this finally stopped only a century ago, having existed throughout the course of history. The sights along its route tell of the empires of Carthage and Rome , the Arab conquest, the glorious mediaeval dynasties of Morocco and of the European trading powers, who tried unsuccessfully to seize control of the Saharan trade
